Duties

Help
  • The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Provides general laboratory support for NBAF’s Biosafety Level (BSL)-2, BSL-3E and Ag, BSL-4, and Biotechnology Development Module (BDM).
  • Adheres to clean/dirty workflows in a scientific environment, ensuring no cross contamination or breech of containment procedures.
  • Performs lab and containment lunchroom cleaning and decontamination tasks.
  • Transports biohazardous waste, glassware, and laundry from autoclaves to designated location.
  • Cleans, decontaminates, and deodorizes waste containers and carts, lifting and carrying 20-30 pounds of waste.
  • Maintains all restroom supplies such as, toilet paper, paper towels, soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, etc. in the restrooms, locker rooms and laboratory spaces.
  • Mixes or blends routine cleaning solutions to proper concentration for decontamination process.
  • Ensures that correct quantities of scrubs, towels, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and general biological laboratory use items.
  • Assists in the tracking and stocking supplies used in the laboratories.

  • Valid state driver's license is required at the time of application.
  • All USDA employees are required to be enrolled in Continuous Vetting, which authorizes government agencies to receive notifications of criminal activity on individuals who hold low risk, public trust, or national security positions.
  • Exposed to cleaning agents. Works inside biocontainment 100% of the time.
  • Work environment may be hot or humid. Exposed to noise from operating machinery.
  • Frequent lifting, carrying and moving of objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Special safety precautions are required, and the incumbent uses protective gear such as laboratory coats, safety aprons, different types of gloves, safety glasses, and goggles.
  • Subject to possible exposure to contagious diseases, pathogens, and other environmental hazards within the laboratory.
  • Quarantine for several days after entry into containment, staying away from cows, sheep, goats, pigs, until the period is up.
  • Moderately heavy physical effort is required and occasional lifting of items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Criminal Justice Information Services database check required for work involving Biological Select Agents and Toxins.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must show you have had training and experience of sufficient scope and quality to provide you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position.
