Duties

Help
  • The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity. The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Applies basic principles of a biological science to assess readings and measurements taken, tests executed, observations made, work completed, samples collected, etc.
  • Is responsible for the daily operational activities of the assigned laboratory.
  • Sorts urgent and routine pest samples from port interceptions nationwide, and forwards to appropriate professional staff for final identification.
  • Tests and analyzes studies, and evaluates data on plant pests identified domestically or intercepted at ports of entry.
  • Performs literature searches and catalogues information from this literature, and develops new techniques or refines and modifies standard methods of specimen preparation.
  • Operates necessary equipment and associated software such as word processor, and stereoscopic/compound photographic system.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

FOR THE GS-07 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-06 grade level) that demonstrates:

  • Handling, sorting, and inventorying biological specimens collected in field surveys or as part of museum collections using microscopes and other laboratory equipment.
  • Recording and maintaining files of biological specimen data using computer spreadsheets and databases, and possessing ability to summarize findings.
  • Operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting laboratory equipment used for scientific investigations of biology.
  • Following standard laboratory protocols with care for specimen integrity.
OR One full year of graduate education in a field of study such as malacology, entomology, mycology, biology, or related fields. 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.

FOR THE GS-08 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-07 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:
  • Using a laboratory management system to track the receipt, inventory, and disposition of biological specimens and data collected in field surveys or as part of museum collections.
  • Performing laboratory procedures, preparing collected data for analysis, and summarizing data in reports
  • Preparing biological samples or specimens for scientific investigation such as anatomical dissection, culturing, microscopy, or molecular analysis using laboratory instruments.
  • Researching scientific literature for information about laboratory methods and the biology of plant pests.
OR Successful completion of Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree in malacology, entomology, mycology, biology, or related fields.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.

FOR THE GS-09 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-08 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:
  • Using keys and identification aids to identify biological specimens according to taxonomy
  • Using the scientific method to troubleshoot and improve laboratory protocols
  • Analyzing biological data and reporting results in written and oral communications
  • Researching scientific literature for new laboratory methods and information on the biology of plant pests.
  • Training others in laboratory practices to process biological specimens in collections or maintain sample collections
OR Successful completion of Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree in malacology, entomology, mycology, biology, or related fields.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.

TRANSCRIPTS are required if:

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-7/8/9 GRADE LEVELS: Applicants may have combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience to meet total qualification requirements. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for that grade level.

  • The scientific disciplines for each location are as follows: Philadelphia PA- Malacology, Beltsville MD- Mycology, and Washington DC- Entomology.
